The process starts with the selection of the figured maple
blank
The maple blank is jointed and the outline cut.
In this instance it was necessary to add two small wings to the lower
bout. With careful selection of the pieces to be added the joint is almost
invisible and allows it to be used on an instrument of this
size.
Isolines are transferred to the top before carving
begins. The isolines refer to points of equal height above the rib.
Holes can then be drilled to the requires depth using a
pillar drill. The waste can then be removed leaving a smooth arch.
The back once rough carved is thicknessed from the inside
and tuning of the plate can be started. Some of the modes of vibration are
shown and are used as a guide in final carving before the back is fixed to
the ribs.
Once fixed to the ribs final adjustments are made when scraping the
recurve.
