A Walnut and Engleman Spruce Flat top cutaway guitar.

A cutaway to the 20th fret.

The bindings on this instrument are Pear/boxwood as is the rosette.

Below is a thumbnail essay on the guitar under construction. Clicking an Image will take you to a larger Picture.

The ribs are bent and attached to the end blocks, once the first linings are installed the the ribs are removed from the mold.

The Top and Back are jointed and thickenssed and cut to a rough outline

The back  and top are braced

Tuning of the top plate is carried out at this stage. Each top is different and requires careful shaping of the braces. The aim is to get a nice clear ring when the top is tapped at the bridge position. The pitch of the note will change as the body of the guitar comes together. The resonance or ring should however remain.

The next task is to to glue the top plate to the ribs

final tuning of the braces is done now.
The linings are glued for the back

Then the box is closed.
The edges are flushed and the binding channels cut. The bindings glued in place and the neck dovetail cut

Then onto the neck. The Mahogany for the heal and the scarf for the headstock cut
Once glued up the headstock veneer is cut and applied and the trussrod channel cut

The fingerboard is thicknessed and then tapered after the fret slots are cut.
